When you’re making guacamole and don’t want to throw away avocado seeds, use our ideas for creative uses for them
One of the lesser known uses for avocado seeds is to use them to create a natural pink dye that you can use to dye fabrics, for example. These fabrics must be composed of natural fibers (cotton, bamboo, wool, linen, silk, etc.) You need about 10-15 seeds to dye one meter of fabric. If you are not able to eat 15 avocados at once, you can gradually collect the seeds and store them for several months in the freezer.
Prepare the fabric for dyeing by soaking it in vinegar for a few hours. Then rinse it in cold water. Wash the seeds thoroughly and place them in the bottom of a large pot. Put the fabric (shorts, T-shirt) in it and pour water over it so that it covers the whole thing. Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 45-60 minutes. Then remove the pot from the stove and leave everything overnight. This will also help deepen the color.
The next day, remove the fabric and rinse it in cool water. Leave it to dry. The pink color obtained from avocado is usually soft, perfect for spring and summer styling.
Of course, you can grow an avocado plant from the seed itself and look forward to your own fruit. Clean the seed of its dark skin, prepare a jar of water and three toothpicks. Stick the toothpicks into the seed so that it stays above the opening of the jar. The bottom part of the stone should be submerged in water. Put the jar in a sunny place. After a few weeks, the first sprouts should show.
If you are a creative person and like to make your own jewelry, for example, avocado seeds are perfect for this. It is a very soft material, perfect for carving. You can buy a special knife for this purpose in an art store and elements for making jewelry (chains, pendants, earwires) in a haberdashery. Below you will find a handful of inspirations from Instagram.
