Sewing your own clothes is a great way to save money and stand out in the crowd. Moreover, DIY-made outfits are becoming more and more fashionable. What will you need to sew a trapeze dress? We suggest!
When you decide to sew your own creation, you give yourself the opportunity to create a unique outfit. Not only can you let your imagination run wild, but you can also make a dress that fits your figure type perfectly. On the internet you can find a variety of dress patternsthat will make this task easier for you.
Good machine is essential
Before you decide to buy, you need to remember that the choice of the right model depends on how much experience you have in sewing. If you are at the beginning of your adventure with sewing, opt for a machine in which you can smoothly change the position of the needle. It is also important that the machine allows for efficient adjustment and density of stitches and has a needle threader and sewing speed adjustment, among other things.
Where to get patterns from?
To create a trapeze dress you will need dress patterns. It will make the job much easier, especially if you are a beginner. There are several places where you can find patterns. For example, a magazine Burda patterns offers with detailed sewing instructions for many sizes and with different levels of difficulty. You can also find patterns online – you just need to print them out.
What else will you need?
Apart from the machine and patterns you need to prepare
- a large amount of fabric (its type really depends on you and whether you want to sew a dress for summer or autumn)
- sewing scissors
- tailor’s measure
- pins to fasten places you need to shorten
- a marker to draw on the fabric the lines to be cut out
Stages of sewing
- On the unfolded material, place the cut patterns. To make it easier to cut out the pattern, you can attach the blanks to the fabric with pins or other things that will make the pattern stick firmly and accurately to the fabric.
- You will need to die-cut the back and front of the dress separately, as well as the sleeves if you want the dress to have them. Remember to leave 1 cm or 2 cm for the seams and the bottom of the skirt. Join the back and front of the dress with pins in those places where you will be guiding the seam.
- The next step is to sew the two parts together. Before you start to apply the stitch, test on an unnecessary scrap of material, how the needle is set in the sewing machine. It is best to choose a fabric that does not rip or roll. Otherwise, sewing will be very difficult and you may have problems with creating even stitches. It is important that you sew on the left side of the fabric
- Remember to cut out the neckline as well. You may cut it out at once in the long linen and then sew only the sides of the fabric along the length from the armpit line to the fold of the dress. Or, you can cut out the neckline halves in the front and back sections.
- When it comes to stitch selection, an overlook stitch is best for folding, while you can use a straight stitch to join two pieces of fabric. The needle should be in the center position.
- When you have joined the back and front together, iron the seams. This will make them look better. Finally, fold up the bottom of the dress, mark the fabric about 2 cm from the edge of the fabric with pins, and lace it to the center.
- Remember to carefully measure the length and width of the dress when cutting out the fabric. Once the pins are in place, put the dress back on to check that it is not too loose or too tight. This will ensure that the overall look is perfect.
